Charity Quilting

TVQG Discontinues Sherwood Charity Quilter’s Open Sew Day

Due to a lack of participation from TVQG members, this Open Charity-focused Sew Day was discontinued.  On Tuesday, March 12, 2024, all fabrics were passed on to the Newberg Parks & Rec / Fire & Rescue sewing group that meets weekly at the Newberg Armory. Several TVQG members belong to this group. The focus of Armory Sewer’s Group is to create charity quilts to share among the community and to have on hand to share when disasters such as fires and floods happen.

Member-Direct Quilt Donations

Some of our members may donate quilts directly to the receiving source.  TVQG would like you to know that we really appreciate this extra effort on your part.  If you have donated a quilt (or quilts) to an organization outside of the scope that our Charity Quilt Coordinators receive, just let a member of the Charity Team know so they can include your efforts in the overall total count of quilts TVQG has donated.

May 2023 CARES NW Donation Update

CARES NW Quilt and Book Challenge

May 16, 2023, marked the conclusion of the Tualatin Valley Quilt Guild’s latest charity quilt challenge. This year-long challenge consisted of TVQG members picking a book and then making a quilt based on an aspect of the book. Our quilters rose to new heights by bringing to the May General Meeting a record-breaking 59 quilts and book sets.  Our charity coordinator, Shirley Shultz processed this huge donation through the Project Linus organization where, per their standards, they were relabeled as Project Linus donation blankets prior to their delivering them to CARES NW organization on May 25, 2023. .

The mission of the CARES NW organization is to stop child abuse and neglect through multidisciplinary prevention, medical evaluation, and ongoing treatment in partnership with our community. Children ranging in age from infants through teens may receive one of our quilts as part of their program.

A big thank you goes out to every one of our quilters who participated in this challenge.  You brought a little bit of love and caring to a child through your generosity.

Charity Quilter’s September/October 2022 Update

Shirley Shultz would like to let everyone know the Charity Quilters received 15 Quilts at the September 20th General Meeting. Many of these quilts were the results of our August Meeting Focus, “Assembling a Quilt From Orphan Blocks.” Some of these quilts were fully completed and some were just quilt tops.  Long-arm quilters, including Mary Frey and Keith Walbridge from our guild, have volunteered to quilt the unfinished quilts. Shirley said she’ll get the bindings on them if needed.

The TVQG Charity Quilters would like to thank everyone for their charitable donations and to invite you to keep those donations coming. So many folks of all stages of life need the warmth and caring a quilt or blanket gives them.  Request: Before sharing a quilt or quilt top, our charity quilter’s team would like to ask that you clip any “wild threads or strings” from your quilt tops.

Shirley also wanted to let us know she received 18 fleece blankets from the Sherwood Senior Center. She’ll make sure that they are distributed amongst the charities that TVQG supports and that accept this type of blankets.

Both Shirley and her co-chairperson, Vicki Lee have been very busy during the last several weeks receiving fabrics and supplies that have been donated to our guild along with delivering quilts, clothing, and supplies to the Caring Closet, and the Beaverton Resource center, just to name a couple places.

If you have clothing items you would like to donate, the Caring Closet has a chute on a shed in the back of the parking lot the Tigard Grange located at 13770 SW Pacific Hwy., Tigard, OR. Their donation chute is unlocked 8am-5pm, 7 days a week. They accept clothing, shoes, hats, bags, purses, and so on. But, please, no furniture or household items. If you would like to learn more about the Caring Closet and how they support our local community, here is a link to their website, https://www.ttsdschools.org/Page/10861

If you have any questions about any of our charity efforts, please reach out to any of the TVQG Officers.

TVQG Local Community Quilt Donations

Hopewell House Quilt Donation

On Friday, May 20th the TVQG Charity Quilters were contacted by the Friends of Hopewell House with a request for quilts.  The following day, TVQG had put out an all-member communication asking our members to assist with this effort, and by Tuesday, May 24th Melanie and Carol delivered these 20 Quilts to them.

The Hopewell House would like to express their thanks for these quilts and they are looking forward to receiving quilts from TVQG in the future.

Here is some information the Friends of  Hopewell House shared with our Charity Quilters:

“In the fall of 2019, Legacy, who owned Hopewell House was forced to close due to financial constraints. Friends of Hopewell House was then established and will reopen the facility in 2022 as the region’s only residential hospice facility.  The home will be a 12-13 bed facility, each topped with a donated quilt, and will include a pediatric room (as sad as that is).  It is estimated that Hopewell House will once again be able to serve approximately150 individuals per year.  Hopewell will be caring for those with the greatest need and the fewest options, with diversity in mind.

The Quilt Program will offer patients a quilt of their choice, handmade by generous and creative community members who have donated their time, talents, and materials. Each quilt will remain with the patient during their care. Upon the patient’s death, their quilt will be part of their “passage observance” with their family, friends, and caregivers.  The family will be invited to take the quilt home with them.  As you can see, the quilt takes on an extremely meaningful, moving, and cherished gift.”

For more information on the Friends of Hopewell House please visit their website at https://friendsofhopewellhousepdx.org/

If you are interested in donating a quilt to them, please contact any member of our Charity Quilters Team.

Quilt for Andie
Melanie Sagebear responded to the needs of a local young lady, Andie, who has multiple medical issues. Andie reached out to the community via the Nextdoor app seeking correspondence.  Melanie saw her request, responded to it, and befriended her.  While speaking with Andie, Melanie found out her favorite color is purple.  So instead of just friending her, Melanie went over and beyond by making Andie a purple quilt.   Here are pictures of Andie with the quilt she gifted her.  Thanks, Melanie for going over and beyond to help this lovely young lady.  I know she will love and adore her new purple quilt.

TVQG Makes Donation to Beaverton Resource Center

On February 23, 2022, Melanie Sagebear dropped off a donation of fourteen quilts and blankets to the Beaverton Resource Center.  Some of the TVQG quilters that added to this donation included Melanie Sagebear, Michelle Faber, Judi Derry, Carol Springer, Sherry Little, and Shirley Schultz.

Here is a copy of the thank you letter we received from them.

Trillium Family Services Receive TVQG Donation

Recently our Charity Quilter, Melanie was contacted by the Trillium Family Services with a request for colorful pillowcases for the children ages newborn through 18 that they support through their organization. In response to this request, on Friday, December 1o, 2021 Melanie and Michelle delivered 60 pillowcases, 12 Quilts, and a box of small stuffed toys.  Michelle says they were very excited to receive our donation. The Trillium Family Services supports families in crisis.

Charity Quilter Chairpersons’ Announce Retirement

We want to thank both Betty Murphy and Vergie Karlson for all they have done and contributed to our guild and the charities we support!  From the day TVQG first originated as a Quilt Guild, Betty and Vergie became active in all TVQG’s charity efforts. Their involvement included participating in monthly sew days, and in addition to quilts, they played a major role in ensuring TVQG‑supported charities also received food, products, and cash donations.  For many years they were responsible for long-arm quilting of hundreds of donated quilt tops.  The Good Neighbor Center, CARES NW, Give Them Wings (for both boys and girls) Project Linus, veterans homes, care facilities, local hospitals, Fire Victims Relief, Foster Care families, Coffee Creek Quilters, Oregon Food Bank, Trillium Family Center, and local dog and cat rescue centers are just some of the long list of charities that have benefited their hard work.

Sadly, each for their own personal reasons, they feel the need to retire from their duties as TVQG Charity Quilter’s Co-chairpersons.

Days for Girls Receives Donation from TVQG

Days for Girls are always in need of supplies and on November 2, 2021, TVQG’s Board moved to donate $250 to them. We have supported them in the past and wanted to continue doing so.  For additional information about the Days for Girls organization please follow this link: Days For Girls.

TVQG Donates to Good Neighbor Center

Recently we found the Good Neighbor Center (GNC) in Tigard, a charity organization TVQG has supported for many years, was in need of well… just about everything.  The TVQG Board immediately presented a motion and approved a $500 cash donation for them.

They were ever so grateful and excited when Michelle and Melanie dropped off the $500 check, cleaning supplies, food items, and 14 quilts made by our Charity Quilters.   Here is a picture of the fourteen quilts.

Good Neighbor Center Ongoing Needs
Because TVQG is committed to assisting the Good Neighbor Center, at our upcoming meetings the Charity Quilters will be bringing back the Good Neighbor Donation Box so our members can conveniently donate supplies to them. Through our website, email communications, or the TVQG newsletter our Comfort Quilters group will let members know what GNC needs the most.  At this time their urgent needs include quilts, blankets, cleaning supplies, OTC medical items, hygiene products, diapers, and shelf-stable food.

TVQG Quilters Donate Quilts to Waverly Children’s Home/Trillium Center

On Monday, January 4, 2021, less than a week after TVQG put a call out to our members saying the Waverly Children’s Home/Trillium Family Center was in need of facemasks and quilts for the families they assist, quilters from our guild responded by delivering 51 quilts, 145 facemasks of various sizes, and a box of children’s books and toys.

We were overwhelmed by the generosity of the members of our guild.  A special thank you needs to go to Melanie for coordinating this effort and to the fifteen quilters that donated quilts, facemasks, and books.

Quilts for Wildfire Victims

On Monday, October 19, 2020, TVQG delivered 50 quilts to the victims of the Oregon wildfires on the 2020 Labor Day weekend.  Thank you so much to everyone who contributed, for your time, efforts, and generosity. Thank you, Sue Capell and Judi Derry for helping to make sure each one had a label, was packaged up, and marked with the size, for easier distribution. The end tally of this batch is 4 queens, 4 full-size, 18 twin-size, and 24 throw and crib-size quilts. I’m sure each one will end up in the hands of someone who has suffered a terrible loss, and it is our way of giving them a comforting hug.

If you are interested in supporting future victims of natural disasters such as wildfires or floods please send an email to TVQG.ContactUs@gmail.com. We are currently accepting all sizes of quilts.

Fabric Donations

Currently TVQG does not have the space requirements to accept donations of quilting fabric and supplies.  We’ll let you know when this situation changes. In the interim TVQG suggests contacting other local quilt guilds or contact Scraps, PDX, a local creative reuse center in Portland.

Recent Fabric Donations
Recently TVQG Comfort Quilters received several separate donations of fabrics including flannel, children’s prints, panels, several bags or boxes of smaller but usable fabric scrap pieces, along with kits, and sampler blocks.

TVQG would like to thank each and every person that has helped with our charity quilting efforts. We will make every effort to either present quilted items made from these donations during the Show and Tell segment of an upcoming meeting and maybe even get some photos to us of some of the quilts that have been made from donation fabrics.

Flannel Sew Days

TVQG’s Charity Quilters received a generous supply of flannel fabric. So, over the course of six months, a small group of charity quilters got together monthly at King City Senior Village, to make children’s quilts.  The Good Neighbor Center in Tigard, CARES Northwest, Project Linus, and individual children going into foster care homes benefited from their efforts.

Here is a picture of some of the ladies taking a lunch break in King City Senior Village’s dining room during their December 2019 get-together.

Free Fabric Shopping Bags for Seniors
In January 2020 local merchants stopped providing bags to customers living in Washington County, Oregon. While we applaud this environmental decision, many folks in our community were caught off guard by this change, including many seniors who live in King City, Summerfield, The Highlands, and surrounding communities.

To fill this need a couple of our quilters along with residents of the King City Senior Village, gathered up some heavier fabric, found a super-simple pattern, rounded up a couple of sewing machines, and a serger, too, then met for several weeks to make fabric shopping bags. The ladies working on this project said they lost count of the exact number of bags they created, but guess they made about 100 bags.

Some of the generous folks receiving the bags just wouldn’t accept them for free and gave our quilters a cash donation. It was decided that any cash donations received for their bags go to the Oregon Food Bank.  To that end, in March 2020, a little over $100 was gifted to the Oregon Food Bank.  The ladies that worked on this project would also like to extend their thanks to the King City Senior Village allowing us a no-cost workspace and for allowing these bags to be handed out in their lobby area.

Charity Quilting Challenges

2021-2022 Fabric Challenge
This challenge was introduced to TVQG members at the October 2021 General Meeting. Quilters accepting this challenge were provided a 1/2 yard fabric from the Good Vibrations Pick Up Sticks from the Maywood Studio line. Participants were challenged to make a quilt incorporating the challenge fabric onto a quilt.  This challenge ran through March 2022 when seventeen completed quilts were donated to Project Linus.

2019-2020 CARES NW Quilt – Book Challenge
This challenge concluded on February 18, 2020. When our awesome group of quilters brought 52 quilts and book sets to our monthly meeting. Some of our quilters even included coordinated stuffed animals, toys, or dolls with their quilt and book sets. Later that week one of our members arranged for CARES NW to pick up the quilt sets and another five quilts were added to this donation. All-in-all TVQG provided them with an amazing total of 57 Quilts. View Photos of some of the quilts we donated to them.

Then to further benefit this organization, in June of 2020, even though TVQG was not holding scheduled meetings many of our quilters met at a pre-arranged time in the parking lot of the King City Clubhouse where a contactless drop off was set up.  The ladies coordinating this drop-off gathered together another group of about 50 children’s quilts which were also delivered to the folks at CARES NW.

If you are interested in making a quilt to donate to them, here are their guidelines.
CARES NW Quilt Guidelines. Completed quilts may be brought to any TVQG’s General Meeting and given to a member of the Charity Quilting Team. Just let them know you would like your quilt to go to CARES NW and they’ll coordinate getting it to them.

Prior Good Neighbor Center Donations

January 2020 thru May 2022 –  Several donations by our members were individually delivered to the folks at the Good Neighbor Center. These deliveries included food, clothing, personal grooming, and cleaning supplies along with several quilts.  The folks at the Good Neighbor Center are always so grateful for any donated items.

December 2019 – On December 13th, Betty Murphy and Carol Springer dropped off another carload of items to them that included quilted household gift items, pillows, sheets, and blankets, along with 18 quilts that members or friends of TVQG had made. Heidi from the Good Neighbor Center said that these supplies and quilts will be distributed among the families currently living there.

November 2019 –  On November 22nd, Betty Murphy, Vergie Karlson, and Carol Springer dropped off food, clothing, bedding, and personal grooming items at the Good Neighbor Center in Tigard. Along with these supplies they also gave them a Grocery Outlet Gift Certificate for $200. This gift certificate is the guild’s annual Christmas present to them. Heidi from Good Neighbor Center was most gracious in receiving the supplies and Gift Card. She wanted to make sure we let everyone know how much they appreciate all the support they receive from us.

August 2019 – On August 8th three of our Charity Quilters, Vergie, Betty, and Carol dropped off 24 quilts at the Good Neighbor Center.  Along with these quilts, they dropped off clothing, bedding, toys, games, and a large bag of personal grooming supplies.  The staff was excited to receive these quilts and even took time out of their busy day to look at each and every one of them.  The Good Neighbor Center currently has a full house consisting of ten families including children. One of those families includes a newborn, which will immediately receive a quilt.  The folks there wanted to make sure we let our quilters know how much they appreciate the generous donations they receive from TVQG.

April 2019 – In April 2019 Charity Quilters Vergie, Betty, and Carol dropped off 15 quilts and handmade teddy bears as well as a bunch of supplies that included paper products, clothing, cleaning products, blankets, and pillows to the Good Neighbor Center in Tigard. The folks at the Center welcomed our quilters with gratitude and even took time out of their busy activities to view the quilts that were being dropped off. They said we had given them enough quilts that each of the children currently staying at the center would be able to receive a quilt to use and take with them, and that each child would receive a teddy bear in their Easter basket the following Sunday.

Here are of some of the beautiful quilts that TVQG shared with the Good Neighbor Center on April 19, 2019.

Both TVQG and the Good Neighbor Center would like to thank our members for their generosity. Great work, Ladies.
