Happenings for the TVQG General Meeting In May 2024

The following things will be taking place at our May 21, 2024 General Meeting.

Our currently scheduled speaker is Anya Doll

Following is Anya’s  Artist Statement.

“I explore similarities in apparent opposites. This has led me to both challenging and inspiring places. Chaos is inherent at all stages of life. I found however that making art was a far preferable response than challenging life to wrestling matches. Facing the tensions inherent in the human condition by lovingly creating out of the very messiness and even pain of living has become my passion. In recent years, navigating deeply challenging places my husband’s mental illness led us, often required more of me than I could give. Two years before he ended his life in 2015, I segued from acrylic painting to “painting with thread” — that is freestyle machine stitching of collaged fibers.

Pain, I have found, becomes a transformative practice while creating meditation/prayer tapestries. Initially inspired by Buddhist Prayer flags in the Himalayas, these flags can be hung tied together or stand alone and be framed. Each is made by layering hundreds of fibers and fabrics to create an effect of colors glowing up from below. Then I lower the feeder feet on my sewing machine and move the piece around to sew in the details. They have frayed edges to symbolize the release of our intentions to love without the deterioration in the elements.

Fat Quarter of the Month

At each general meeting, our quilters bring in various themed fat quarters. For each Fat Quarter brought in the quilter receives a raffle ticket.

The Fat Quarter theme for May 2024 is Spring flower prints & colors, pink, yellow, pale orange, pale violets, creamy white.

Block of the Month

The presenter of the Block of the Month provided the fabric to complete this Wrench block.  If you are interested in completing the May 2024 Block of the Month please contact Kathy Chase at sandborn28@comcast.net for the appropriate fabric.

Pizza Box Challenge

This anonymous challenge started in March 2024 with our Challenge Team handing out a “pizza box” for the participants to document their preferences and store any preferred fabric.

This challenge consists of your making three different blocks of your choice based on the original participant’s instructions and fabrics (if included).  Then each month for the next five to six months quilters will make and add three additional unique quilt blocks to another participant’s pizza box.  At the conclusion of the challenge the original participant will receive their pizza box back filled with an assortment of unique completed blocks all ready to assemble in to a quilt.

If you are interested in participating in this challenge, please visit the “Pizza Box Challenge Desk” at the next meeting.

UFO Challenge

Each calendar year we hold a UFO Challenge.  This challenge is meant to encourage our quilters to complete their unfinished projects (UFO’s).

Our current UFO Challenge for began on January 1, 2024, and will run through the December 31, 2024. Prizes for UFO participants will be awarded at the January 21, 2025 meeting.  Guild members are not required to turn in a form documenting their current UFO projects.  Participation in this challenge is on the honor system and there is no fee to participate.  For each completed UFO that is presented during the Show and Tell portion of a General Meeting in 2024, you are eligible to receive a ticket. Prizes for participating in this challenge will be awarded in a random ticket drawing at the January 2025 General Meeting.

And, by the way, if you aren’t familiar with the term UFO for quilters it stands for any UnFinished quilt Object (project)
